Ben Carson — Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon, philanthropist and recent thorn-in-the-side to President Barack Obama — charmed a sold-out audience Wednesday morning at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

The crowd, mostly retirees, frequently applauded Carson’s words encouraging the support of education, a deep faith in God and a nation unafraid to be politically incorrect.

Most appeared also to have watched a video of his presentation Feb. 7 at the National Prayer Breakfast attended by Obama. The most enthusiastic applause Wednesday came when he mentioned that appearance.
